Basically, Superfoods are a group of foods which are thought to have a huge positive impact on a person’s health. They are said to be able to lessen the risk of diabetes and cancer, help you lose weight, boost your energy and lower your blood cholesterol levels. Below are some examples of these Superfoods.

Green leafy vegetables like spinach and broccoli contain antioxidants and essential vitamins and minerals like calcium and potassium. They are also a good source of fiber.

Legumes are another kind of superfood that is rich in fiber. They help maintain your blood sugar and cholesterol level at a healthy range. These can be eaten as is or as part of soups or salads.

Soy products not only contain a lot of protein, they also have antioxidants which decrease the risk of heart disease.

Citrus fruits like lemons and oranges are also filled with antioxidants and Vitamin C which help boost the immune system and prevent cancer.

Tomatoes and berries, which include blueberries and strawberries, are other superfoods which contain vitamins and antioxidants which strengthen the immune system. The lycopene content in tomatoes also contribute to its cancer-fighting properties.

Generally, the benefits of these foods are greater when they are consumed raw or lightly cooked (which includes steaming and stir-frying). Carrots and tomatoes, however, have more of an effect when they are cooked first. The belief is that their antioxidant elements are freed during cooking.

Other foods that have labelled as superfoods include: tea, pumpkin, salmon, acai and walnuts.
