Why Was Ephedra Banned?
Ephedra was banned in the USA due to it’s links to a number of deaths from athletes all the way through to older people. Such people has Kory Stringer, who had been using ephedra to help him lose weight and gain athletic performance died of a heatstroke during a Minnesota Vikings pre season workout. The FDA decided to ban the sale of ephedra based products in December 2003 after there was over 155 deaths reported to them.
While the ban was put in place in April of 2004 because of the above reason it was overturned in April 2005 which allowed the sale of ephedra based products again. Then FDA went back to apply for the ban to be put back into place after more problems related to ephedra had been proven. This ban was put into force in July of 2006.
But what are those things that made the FDA go back again and get the ban reinforced? There are many reasons for this but a lot of it is down to the addictive properties of the drug. It is the problems with the addiction and people withdrawal from it that have also led to drug dealers and manufacturers using it in the manufacture of other illegal street drugs such as speed, meth crystal and more besides.
